E A Seguy was a French designer of patterns and textiles throughout the Art Deco movement, known for decorative albums inspired by natural forms. Papillons is a marriage of art, technique, and the natural world. Exotic butterfly specimens were faithfully reproduced using the pochoir technique in which pigment is applied through stencils by hand resulting in depth and texture, giving details seldom seen without a microscope. Seguy’s vibrant, decorative compositions have been appreciated by both artists and scientists for almost a century. The examples within this calendar were reproduced from the Papillons album in the collection of the Research Library of the American Museum of Natural History.
